What to compare when buying your first paddle.
A Comfortable First Fit
Start with the grip and handle. You should be able to change grips and prepare for the next shot without feeling that you are fighting the paddle.
Choose a useful shape
Compare face width, reach and handle length. A wider or hybrid shape may be worth trying alongside an elongated design. Neither profile guarantees a forgiving paddle.
Include Soft Shots
Test dinks, resets, blocks and serves. Check whether you can make consistent contact and control depth across these different shots.
Set a budget for starting out
Set a budget and check the exact model’s specifications and return policy. Leave room for balls, shoes and playing sessions when planning your first purchase.
